19-07-2021 – The Nakonde Immigration Office has secured the conviction of a Burundian national for unlawful return to Zambia after being removed by Mpika Immigration Office on 1st July 2021 via Nakonde Border Control contrary to section 36(5) of the Immigration and Deportation Act No. 18 of 2010 of the Laws of Zambia. Medalo Irakiza (23) was arrested on 7th July 2021 on a queue at Tazara Station in Nakonde District as he attempted to board a train to Kapiri Mposhi without having any travel documents. It was later established that he had been recently removed from the country by Mpika Immigration Office and that he had returned to Zambia before his required period to remain outside the country expired.
He appeared before the Magistrate Court in Nakonde on 13th July 2021 and was convicted and sentenced to two (02) years simple imprisonment with no option of a fine. This brings the total number of convictions secured by the Department between 12th and 14th July to one hundred (100).
Meanwhile, the Department between 12th and 14th July 2021 apprehended one hundred and six (106) persons for various immigration offences country-wide. During this period the Department also removed twenty-two (22) illegal immigrants from the country.
