16-07-2024 – The Department of Immigration between 12th and 15th July, 2024 apprehended 62 suspected illegal immigrants in three separate operations carried out in Lusaka, Chipata and Katete. Thirty-one were apprehended on 15th July, 2024 during an operation which covered Lusaka’s Middle West, Garden House, Mumbwa Road and Kanyama. Those nabbed included 20 Burundians, Eight Congolese, two Egyptians and one Tanzanian. Seventeen Malawians were apprehended on 14th July, 2024 in Chipata’s East Rise during an operation conducted in conjunction with other security wings while 14 other Malawians were on the same day apprehended for illegal entry by the Katete Immigration Office. The 14 Malawians were nabbed at an Immigration checkpoint along the Great East Road, aboard different public service buses after they failed to produce travel documents.

The Lusaka, Chipata and Katete operations brought the number of persons apprehended for various immigration offences between 12th and 15th July, 2024 countrywide to 114.

Further, the Kapiri Mposhi Magistrate Court on 12th July, 2024 convicted and sentenced a 30-year-old Nigerian Information Technology Specialist, Kazzashim Kuzasuwat to a fine of K 20,000 or in default 12 months simple imprisonment for unlawful stay contrary to section 11(3) of the Immigration and Deportation Act Number 18 of 2010 of the Laws of Zambia. He was apprehended on 9th July, 2024 at the Luanshimba Chekpoint along the Great North Road aboard a Lusaka-bound public service bus after he failed to produce documentation legalizing his stay in Zambia. This brings the number of convictions secured by the Department of Immigration between 12th and 15th July, 2024 to 28.

Furthermore, the Department of Immigration has received 50 more Zambians removed from neighbouring countries for committing various offences. The latest case involved 49 Zambians among them 30 males, 11 females and eight minors who were received on 15th July, 2024 by Officers at Katima Mulilo Border control for illegal entry and unlawful stay in Namibia. Another Zambian was received by Officers at Kasumbalesa Border Control on 12th July, 2024 after he was removed by Congolese Authorities for illegal entry and unlawful stay.

In addition, the Department of Immigration between 12th and 15th July 2024 removed 49 illegal immigrants from the country and refused seven persons entry into Zambia for failing to meet entry requirements.
