10-07-2024 – The Livingstone Magistrate Court on 9th July, 2024 convicted and sentenced Henry Phiri, a 42-year-old Malawian Traditional Doctor to 12 months simple imprisonment without the option of a fine, for unlawful stay. Officers from the Livingstone Regional Immigration Office picked Mr. Phiri from Libuyu Police Station on 13th February, 2024 where he had been detained by Police following a domestic dispute with his Zambian wife.  Investigations revealed that he had overstayed in Zambia. Mr. Phiri is a second offender having been convicted for a similar offence in 2023 leading to his removal from the country after he paid a K 300 court fine.

Further, on 8th July, 2024, the Department of Immigration in Lusaka secured the conviction of 45-year-old Malawian Brown Mnthinda for illegal entry, unlawful stay and concealing his true national identity. For all three counts he was sentenced to pay a fine of K 50,000 or nine months simple imprisonment. He was apprehended on 26th March, 2024 in Chainda during a routine operation. When requested to produce proof of legal immigration status, Mnthinda produced a Green Zambian National Registration Card which was not enough as his accent gave him away. Investigations later revealed that the National Registration Card had been forged and that he had entered and remained in Zambia illegally.

Furthermore, the Kafue Magistrate Court on 8th July, 2024 convicted and sentenced William J. Scholtz, a 61-year-old South African to a fine of K 25,000 or nine months of simple imprisonment for illegal entry and unlawful stay. He was apprehended on 4th July, 2024 at the Kafue checkpoint after it was discovered that he had been staying in Zambia unlawfully since 14th February, 2009 the date when he entered the country through Kazungula Border Control to seek employment.

The Livingstone, Lusaka and Kafue Court outcomes brought the number of convictions secured by the Department of Immigration between 8th and 9th July, 2024 to 16.

In addition, the Department of Immigration in Lusaka on 9th July, 2024 successfully removed 58 persons. The 56 Ethiopians and two Somalis, who had been involved in cases of smuggling of migrants in different parts of the country, were removed via Kenneth Kaunda International Airport. This exercise brought the number of removals across the country between 8th and 9th July, 2024 to 72.

Similarly, the Kasama Regional Immigration Office is set to remove 22 Burundian nationals aged between 19 and 25 from the country. The group comprising 21 males and one female was intercepted on Monday, 8th July, 2024 at Chikumanino Bus Station for inconsistencies regarding their hosts in Zambia. Most of them could not name their supposed hosts while a few submitted names of persons who themselves were just visitors and therefore ineligible to host another foreign national. The Officers were alerted to the presence of the group by concerned members of the public as they attempted to purchase bust tickets to Lusaka.

The Department of Immigration between 8th and 9th July, 2024 apprehended 37 persons for various Immigration offences countrywide and refused two foreign national entry for failing to meet immigration entry requirements.
